We all know how pathetic is the traffic system in Kannur. The usual Kerala Narrow roads and curves make it hell. And record breaking new vehicle registration adds up to the traffic blocks.
As we all know the kannur comes first in combined rural cum urban development. No other district has got same level of equal development for both rural and urban system. Kannur is the fourth in facilities for infrastructure and shopping after Cochin, Trivandrum and Calicut. Here people adapt to anything new fast. The gulf money helps the people to lead a posh life over here.
Years and years Kerala was ruled by people basically from kannur. The leaders like EK Nayanar, K Karunakaran were from Kannur. Still the people of kannur never got anything back from them. The Kannur airport was approved when Mr.CM Ibrahim was union minister of aviation. Mr.MV Raghavan tried to bring something but the political rivalry spoiled the plans.The railway flyover works moves like snail. No politicians to ask. And the municipality never does anything in infrastructure or waste management.
Here I would like to discuss the traffic jams and some solutions. In City the traffic light works for few days and turn into yellow from then always. Kannur city traffic turns hell from there. The hectic traffic between Tazhe chovva and Kannur busstand is the major concern. Kannur bus stand is on one side and payyannur route is in another side. Still all vehicles to both of these places travels through same road, Police never take any steps to deviate these vehicles so that the traffic jam can be reduced.
There are two major highways in Kannur.
State Highway 38 (Kannur Kuthuparamba)
National Highway 66(Kannur Thalassery payyannur)
All Kannurians know below easy routes towards Kannur bus stand or Payyannur side. But the roads are never widened or metal work is not done recently.
Another easy route for all who travels towards Payyannur, Taliparamba, Parassinikadavu, Kasargod. But as usual roads are narrow.
The recent KK Builders bus stand cum Shopping complex was one revolution there. Let us hope something good happens in traffic issues also.

One of the easiest route if the roads are good. But the roads are never metaled or widened.

Thej, Good observation and suggestion. I don't know the current condition of these alternative roads but I understood from your post it's pathetic. But even when it was in good it was less used, I must say. All the private vehicles could have deviated to this road to avoid the traffic congestion in Thazhe-Mele chovva stretch. But of course one can argue that there is a level cross in the alternative road :(
ReplyDeleteThere is a news that the old bus stand soon going to be a history?? Actually it should be. Do we still need that? instead it can be converted to a shopping mall or a market under the roof with good facilities etc...

DeleteAlso high time to demolish old bus stand and construct new mall there. Last municipal budget said something like that. Let us see...
